IS THE PANDEMIC RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR HAIR LOSS?

STRESS AND POST-COVID SYMPTOMS MEAN THAT MANY OF US ARE LOSING HAIR. HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

If you are having issues with hair loss since the beginning of the pandemic, you are not alone. Our hair grows in different stages, and many factors contribute to regular and aggravated hair loss.

img

Skin and hair experts agree that lockdowns have made people more aware of their hair and skin issues. You can blame stress during this pandemic situation for your hair fall though, whether you had the virus or not. Although, remember that losing up to 100 hairs daily is considered normal.

Hair fall is a common result among those who have had COVID. The good thing is that it is temporary. The hair cycle comprises three stages— the growing phase, the resting phase, and the shedding phase. The hair that you see fall when you wash or comb your hair is shedding hair and up to 15 percent of our hair is in this stage at any time. The rest of the hair is in the growing phase and resting phase. In case of a stressful event, either physical or mental stress for the body, up to 50 percent of the hair in the growing phase goes into the shedding phase, leading to excessive hair fall. Temporary hair loss has been a common occurrence since 2020. Common triggering events are fever, severe infections, major surgery, and physical or emotional stress. Obesity is another reason that leads to hormonal imbalances which can lead to hair loss, as most scalp hairs have hormone receptors.

This shedding usually occurs post the first three months after a stressful event, not immediately. Doctors have also seen patients who have recovered from COVID experience heavy hair fall because, in addition to low immunity and heavy medication, patients also have the stress of infecting loved ones.

Worry not, as this hair loss is temporary as all the hair that sheds off comes back. With the right supplements and hair growth serums to treat it, your hair will recover in a couple of months. If this stage continues beyond six months, it can continue for years. It’s best to consult your doctor to check for deficiencies and help your body heal itself and your hair back. Eating antioxidant-rich food is also necessary, so are nourishing hair treatments to keep your hair strong, and detangling serums such as Livon, which helps avoid more hair fall due to breakage. Exercising and eating healthy will give you a good immune system. And when the health is good, problems related to hair fall, such as stressors can be minimized. Since nutritional deficiency can also cause hair fall, it is important to have a balanced diet that gives you enough carbs, good fats, and protein (since hair is made of protein). If your diet is a cause, correcting your eating habits will improve the condition. You need to de-stress. Get involved in a good hobby or do yoga or meditation to minimize the effect of stressors. Choose the right products, keep hair procedures to a minimum.

THE CLAW CLIPS

You could add a few tiny flowers to your claw clip look if wishing to change things up. Or you can just pick a simple butterfly-shaped clip.

CLIPPING GOOD

Unless you already don’t have them, buy all kinds of hair clips and pins to pull your hair away from your face in style. Pearl and rhinestone clips are extremely popular in K-dramas and K-pop videos. You can use them for long or short hair and these novelty clips won’t just help keep your shorter layers away but also make them look stylish in an instant. You can even add all clips to a braid to look edgy..

THE BRAIDED HALO

img

Braids and buns can be a difficult yet stylish combo. If you are a pro at braiding, try putting your hair up in a braided bun of your choice. You could create a halo or make multiple braids that come together in a bun. You can add tiny rhinestones to your braids too for more glam for a party..

LOW LOOP

img

A low sleek bun works for longer hair, but if you have short hair, just create a low sleek loop, and tie it up. Use Livon Super Styler Serum for straighter hair up to 12 hours.

WE DECODE THE SIGNATURE MAKEUP STYLES OF THE LEAD STARS OF THE SHOW, EUPHORIA

Back when Euphoria hit our screens in 2019, its immediate impact on the world of makeup and fashion was inescapable. It was the biggest beauty trend at New York Fashion Week then. While the plot and story pace might have made the audience sit on the fence, the makeup for the show, created by Doniella Davy, has only found more love and admiration from fans.

Here’s how you can figure out who is your makeup soul sister from the show.

MADDY

img img

Maddy is always put together. To do a Maddy look, you should have your hair and your makeup done, as she doesn’t settle for either. Her nails are done, and she is always well styled. Maddy is all about the eyes. She plays a lot with hair too.

To get Maddy’s looks, love liners as she does. You can create sharp dual-winged liners and sometimes also add a bit of colour. Her signature would be diamantes and pearls around the eyes, each carefully placed. You can use cool-tone glitter and eyeshadow, and black rhinestones to embellish your winged liner. Use lots of mascara and heavy lashes for the eyes. Do a very minimal but dewy base makeup.

CASSIE

img img

She has a very old-world charm. She likes doe-eyed looks, and her hair is well done and often retro. She doesn’t miss her skincare routine, so the skin is always bright and natural. For Cassie’s look, all you need are soft eyeshadows in blues, light pink, or orange, or purple. Always use mascara. You could also work on your lower lashes, Twiggy-style. She also likes delicate rhinestones and soft shimmers on her eyes.

JULES

Jules uses bright shimmers or glitters with graphic eyeliner patterns and shapes. Her eyes often have the boldest mix of colours. The base is minimal, and she shows freckles and sticks to pink, peach lips. Jules is very experimental with diamantes, a mix of blues and reds, and stickers. Hair is pretty simple, eyes are bold. Face stickers in all shapes would be Jules’ signature. Her signature would be some graphic element around the eyes.

RUE

img

She wears no makeup unless she’s going to a party. There is so much stuff happening in her life that she would rather deal with her emotions than care about makeup. She uses stickers sometimes, or kohl smudged smoky eyes with a bit of glitter.

KAT

img img

Kat’s makeup as it always consists of bright or bold eyeshadows like green and yellow. She is sometimes seen with a red lip with a dark line or a red eyeshadow with pulled liner and gothic eyes. Her hair is a short, cute bob. She isn’t always goth but even girly. Add a choker to complete your look.

HOW TO DO THE K-POP FAVOURITE PREPPY, COLLEGE FASHION RIGHT

You just got schooled! Turns out, while K-pop stars are old enough to join their country’s army, preppy, high-school/college fashion is one of the most sought-after K-pop styles though. From airport looks to MVs, this trend is a staple in not just K-pop but has also become a favourite of some of fashion’s it-girls around the world (think, Kendall Jenner in a cropped sweater vest or Bella Hadid in a pleated mini skirt). But trust K-Pop stars to give it their cutesy twist. Here’s all you need to know about academia fashion, and all the tips you need to top this fashion exam.

img

THE HISTORY

img img

As the name suggests, preppy or academia fashion has its origins in college and high school uniforms of America’s Ivy League elite schools. And however trendy and 2022 this trend looks in K-pop MVs, it has been around and gained peak popularity around the 1950s. Formal shoes such as brogues, loafers and boat shoes are unisex. Pleated A-line skirts and blazers with logos are other formal aspects of this look. Rest is a lot of sporty fun that includes bomber jackets, cardigans and vests, high socks, jerseys, rad sports shoes, tailored shorts, and even a tie thrown in for irony. It offers a way to experiment with athleisure too as a lot of looks gain inspiration from the college sports team uniforms. And if you want to do highly experimental preppy fashion, look no further than K-pop MVs for #inspo. So, whatever your style, academia fashion offers a little something for everyone. No doubt it’s a K-pop favourite worn by stars with varied musical styles in the industry.

HOW TO DO IT

img

Pleated A-line skirts form a staple in this style for K-pop videos. They can be in plaid and can even have a matching blazer on top worn with a white blouse and a strand of pearls. You can make it different by pairing a blazer and skirt of two different kinds of plaids or two different colours. You can do this in pastel tones such as pistachio, pink, powder blue, and lilac. You can also wear this skirt with a cardigan. You can wear it with a loose cardigan; a fitted cardigan worn over a blouse; or with a sweater vest too. Cardigans don’t just need to be in solid colours, but stripes are very common too (as seen in K-drama, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo). You can wear an oversized blazer over a pair of tailored shorts and punk boots. Experiment with your makeup with this look, by either, using a matte shadow all over your eyes in a pop colour that contrasts your outfit, or you can match too. Another look you could try is to use glitter on your lower lashline and cover the top lid in a creamy, shimmery neutral shadow. You could also do a very subtle blurred brown winged eye. Sometimes, you can go sci-fi and pair your plaids or tailored pieces with a metallic bomber or some killer shoes to make a statement. Based on your hair length, your hair can either be in a bob, or you could do a high, sleek ponytail.
